How to Make Milk Kefir and Why It's Like Magic in a Jar

The first time I made kefir, I gagged and thought I just made a huge glass of curdled milk.

I was given some weird looking jelly beads known as “kefir grains” from my friend Mary.

She said “It’s seriously so easy to make. Just pour milk over them and let it sit for 24 hours and they are sooo good for you”...

Not to mention her and her family drink it all the time.

Easy enough!

I made my kefir and 24 hours later, I open the jar…

I just about died from the smell alone, it smelled like milk that sat in a sippy cup for days.

What did I just do?

I couldn’t believe I was actually supposed to drink this stuff.

I definitely wasn’t going to be the first to try it.

I handed the jar to Jordan and he took one sniff and said “ NO WAY!” and passed it right back.

If this stuff is supposedly sooo good for you, I knew there had to be a way to makes this sour smelling jar of thick milk taste good.

HERE ARE MY TIPS

  1. It should taste similar to Greek yogurt that’s “bubbly”. It’s ok to start with less fermentation time ~18 hours and a little more natural sweetener, we love maple syrup. Trust me It’s worth it.

  2. You’re *literally* fermenting something… so EXPECT fermentation. Think sauerkraut, sourdough bread, kombucha.

  3. You can drink it plain but we like to add in frozen fruit, cinnamon, lemon, etc. to flavor it. Think drinkable yogurt.

  4. We like it chilled

Kefir is WORTH it.

Our son Gabe struggled with eczema for over a year.

We tried every prescription cream under the sun and none of them worked.

Not to mention THERE WERE EXPENSIVE.

One week on Kefir…this stuff is magic…and his skin was clear.

My kids beg for this stuff now.
